What is a Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a procedure that increases or restores breast size through the placement of breast implants or by transferring fat from another part of your body.
- Breast Implant Types— The two most common breast implants options are silicone and saline filled implants. Our plastic surgeons will review all of your options with you and will help you determine which implant is best to meet your goals.
- Silicone Gel Implants— Have been around and studied for decades. There is a lot of research behind the safety of silicone implants. They are pre-filled with internally cohesive silicone gel (not runny liquid these days) and depending on your body shape and aesthetic goals, there are different projections levels of silicone gel implant types. Overall, many women prefer silicone implants over saline implants due to the fact they tend to look and feel more natural and have a decreased chance of feeling the ripples of the implant.
- “Gummy Bear” Implants— Breast implant research and advances in technology have produced its fifth generation of highly cohesive silicone gel implants, which has been called “Gummy Bear”. This is due to the internal cohesiveness, shape retention, and lower risk of leaking than previous generations of silicone implants. Many patients comment that the look and feel of these implants is superior to other forms of silicone gel. This is a highly desired implant option among women of all age groups.
- Saline Implants— Saline implants actually have a silicone shell, but they are filled with saline (salt water). They are also a great option for breast implants and are chosen by many people. The implant can be placed with a slightly smaller incision due to the fact that the shell is inserted in a deflated state and filled with the saline solution after correct placement. Saline implants have also been extensively studied for safety and are used very frequently worldwide for breast enhancement.
- Breast Augmentation Fat Transfer— In select patients, the best option for Breast Augmentation is by utilizing their own body fat through a Fat transfer. Using a similar technique that is used for a Brazilian Butt Lift (“BBL”), fat is removed from a less desired portion of your body and is purified through a sterile process while you are asleep in the operating room. This fat is then transferred in multiple layers to achieve the desired result of larger, fuller breasts. One of the biggest benefits of this method is that it is your own tissue and there are no artificial implants being placed. This is a great option for smaller volume breast augmentations in women who have small breasts, but excess fat around their waist and abdomen.
Who is an Ideal Candidate for Breast Augmentation?
Women who desire full, perky, youthful appearing breasts.
How is a Breast Augmentation Performed?
Breast Augmentation procedures begin with a very small incision that is usually hidden in the line of the lower breast crease. The silicone or saline implant is inserted underneath the breast tissue or chest muscle and is adjusted for the best appearance prior to closing the incision. Performed under general anesthesia, the entire procedure takes approximately one hour to complete for both breasts. In certain patients, a Breast Augmentation may need to be combined with a Breast Lift or Mini Breast Lift to provide patients with optimum aesthetic results.
Where Will My Breast Augmentation Be Performed?
All surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis at our on-site licensed ambulatory surgery center, Coastal Surgery Center, located in Jacksonville, FL.
What is a Virtual 3D Breast Augmentation Simulator App?
There is a virtual 3D breast augmentation simulator app that we use at our office that allows you to simulate what different size and different form implants may look like after they are placed during surgery. This can be a more realistic appearance compared to traditional implant sizers that are placed in your bra to simulate your projected post operative bust size. You are able to see what your breast surgery results will look like in real time. With these options available in the office, you can better visualize what your projected results will be after you have recovered and healed from your surgery.

What is the Recovery for a Breast Augmentation?
Most patients recover quickly from the procedure and experience a brief recovery with only mild discomfort. If a Breast Augmentation is combined with a Breast Lift or a Mini Breast Lift, the recovery period can be longer as more incisions are required for a lifting type of procedure. Depending on a patient’s type of work, patients can be back to work in one to two weeks. However, physical labor and working out must be delayed for 4-6 weeks in order for proper healing to occur and to decrease the risk of complications.
How Much Does a Breast Augmentation Cost?
Breast Augmentation costs can vary from patient to patient depending on factors such as implant type and whether or not it is combined with another procedure. All applicable costs will be discussed during your private, personal consultation with one of our Plastic Surgeons at one of our conveniently located offices in Jacksonville, FL.
