Tummy tuck surgery is the optimal procedure for achieving a firm, toned abdomen, as it eliminates excess skin and fat from the stomach. With the dramatic body sculpting results that can be achieved, it’s no surprise that many patients are interested in this procedure. Unfortunately, not all people are candidates for a tummy tuck. If you’re wondering whether you’ll qualify for a tummy tuck surgery, your BMI can be a good indicator.
BMI, or body mass index, measures the relationship between a person’s height and their body weight, which then indicates body fat level. Patients with a high BMI typically have high amounts of body fat, which can be problematic for plastic surgery. This is because patients with high body fat content will be at higher risk of infections, blood clots and other complications. Due to the risks involved, tummy tuck surgery cannot be performed on patients that exceed the target BMI. In addition to the health risks, patients with a high BMI simply will not achieve optimal results from a tummy tuck. A tummy tuck is not a weight loss procedure, and there are limitations to how much fat can be removed. Therefore, individuals with high BMIs are generally advised to pursue natural weight loss before receiving a tummy tuck.
Most patients with a BMI under 30 are within the target BMI range for a tummy tuck. If you are in good overall health, you should be able to receive the tummy tuck surgery without added risk.
A BMI between 30 and 39 categorizes a person as obese. Patients in this range will need to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. While some patients in this range may be eligible for treatment, this group is still susceptible to the risks outlined above.
A BMI over 40 categorizes a person as morbidly obese. Patients in this category will not be eligible for a tummy tuck surgery.
Regardless of your BMI, it’s important to remember that the closer you are to your ideal body weight, the better your results will be. As a reminder, a tummy tuck is not a weight loss surgery. If you’re overweight and struggling with large amounts of fat, the tummy tuck surgery will not be able to provide you with a thin, contoured figure. In many cases, a tummy tuck can only remove a few pounds of fat and excess skin. If you are not close to your ideal weight, we recommend pursuing natural weight loss strategies before your tummy tuck surgery. Once you are closer to your goal weight, a tummy tuck can help you take the final steps towards achieving your goals.
